Don’t let the concept of wood fence maintenance scare you away, anyone of any age can do it assuming all is well and healthy, etc. Unfortunately this is part of owning a fence, and even metal fences have some things that need or should be done. You may live here for ten more years and want to sell, and then you will regret not having done maintenance on your fence as it’ll look terrible and drag down the value of your home. Here are three suggestions for fence care and maintenance, and they have been tested over time.
Create a schedule where you carry out periodic visual inspections of your fence which is particularly important for wood fences because there are too many things that can potentially cause damage. Whatever you do, try and be organized about it, but this is at your discretion. Maybe this is just a guy thing, but these are good admin tools to have and are a solid resource. A picket fence will take a little more time because you have more parts to it, the pickets. One of the greatest risks or threats aside from moisture and rot are termites, and not much needs to be said about them.
One of the most pernicious problems found in wood fences are the various strains of mold that can begin forming. You can protect your fence with a judicious application of stain, and there are some that are chemically enhanced to repudiate mold. There are adverse consequences if you do a bad job of staining, or if it comes from the fence maker that way and this has to do with thinner layers. The best places to look for initial growth is near the ground and other areas that do not usually get as much sun as others.
How often you clean your fence and what you use will dictate if you should use tarps or similar items. Most of the time you will want to do this if you are killing mold with bleaching solutions. After you clean your fence, just let it dry out or even better is to transfer the standing water to a bucket and dispose. Killing anything like flowers, vegetables, and the grass is something you naturally want to avoid all the time. If you want to go with a brush, then be sure the bristles are not so strong that you scratch the surface of the stain, and this is a possibility few consider. Stress free maintenance with your wood fence is what this is about because it need not be an involved process. In fact, if you wanted to you could never stain your fence. It is not necessary to use techniques that are more than what is needed for the condition.
